NIPT Advanced Test:
The advanced NIPT test can identify various abnormalities in the early stages of pregnancy, starting from week 10. The test is highly accurate in detecting chromosomal abnormalities in the baby.
What does the test Include?
At My Genetic DNA Center, our test will cover all 23 chromosomes which include Down Syndrome, Edward Syndrome, Petau syndrome, etc.
When NIPT Advanced Test can be done?
The test can be done as early as the 9th week of pregnancy. However, we recommend the test between the 12th to 16th week of pregnancy. During this gestational age, the amount of fetal DNA in the mother’s blood sample is significantly higher, allowing for more accurate results.
What is fetal DNA?
Fetal DNA or Cell-free DNA, is the baby’s DNA which is present in the mother’s blood sample.
How Does the NIPT Advanced test work?
To conduct the test, a simple blood draw is performed from the pregnant woman’s arm. This blood sample contains DNA from both the mother and the fetus. The Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) is essential in determining the chances of chromosomal conditions in the baby.
What is trisomy?
Trisomy is a chromosomal abnormality where there is an extra copy of a specific chromosome. Normally, each cell in the human body contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, a total of 46 chromosomes. However, in trisomy, there is an additional copy of one of the chromosomes, resulting in a total of three copies instead of the usual two.
Is NIPT Advanced Test safe?
NIPT is a completely safe testing method that involves a non-invasive procedure.
How was the NIPT advanced test performed?
The healthcare provider performs a basic blood test by drawing blood from the mother’s arm, just like any regular blood test. It is essential to emphasize that this procedure is entirely safe for the baby. Once the blood sample is collected, the healthcare provider sends it to the laboratory for processing and analysis without delay.
Who needs to get tested?
NIPT is recommended for individuals aged 30 years or older, couples who have received a high probability result in a previous or ongoing pregnancy, or those who have a confirmed chromosomal abnormality in a previous pregnancy.
Are there any conditions that NIPT Advanced Test can not detect?
NIPT cannot detect structural conditions that affect the brain, face, stomach, kidney, bladder, limbs, or Spina Bifida. Doctors typically recommend ultrasound scans to identify structural abnormalities.
What if the NIPT Advanced test comes positive?
If NIPT advanced test comes positive, it means that the test has detected certain genetic abnormalities or conditions in the fetus. It is important to note that while NIPT is highly accurate, it is a screening test and not a diagnostic test. A positive result from NIPT does not provide a definitive diagnosis of a specific condition but indicates an increased risk that further evaluation is needed.
Here are the steps that typically follow a positive NIPT result:
When the NIPT test results come back positive, healthcare providers recommend further tests like CVS or amniocentesis to confirm the final diagnosis.
At this point, genetic counseling is also crucial. Genetic counselors assist parents in understanding the implications of the test results, the available diagnostic options, and potential outcomes.
Additionally, comprehensive ultrasound is performed to identify any physical abnormalities that could be related to the genetic condition detected by the NIPT.
Why choose NIPT Advanced Test?
NIPT, also known as Non-Invasive Prenatal Test, is chosen for its ability to assess the possibility of certain genetic conditions in the baby without invasive procedures. During the development of the baby, genes within tiny structures called chromosomes play a crucial role. Normally, each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes.
Sometimes, changes can occur during the formation of sperm or egg cells, leading to the presence of an extra chromosome in the baby. Down syndrome, Edward syndrome, and Patau syndrome are examples of such conditions. While these conditions can occur in babies of mothers of any age, the likelihood increases with maternal age.
NIPT involves the examination of cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) present in the maternal blood. This helps assess the possibility of an extra chromosome in the baby without the need for invasive procedures. NIPT provides valuable information to expectant parents, allowing them to make informed decisions about their pregnancy.
What type of results will I get?
- Low Risk: If you receive low probability results, it means that the chances of your baby having chromosome abnormalities are less.
- High Risk: A high probability result from NIPT indicates a higher likelihood of a specific trisomy, such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau syndrome.
Advantages of the NIPT Advanced Test:
- Accuracy: NIPT has an outstanding accuracy rate in detecting common chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau syndrome.
- Early Detection: One of the key benefits of NIPT is its ability to detect genetic conditions early in pregnancy, even as early as 10 weeks gestation.
- Non-Invasiveness: NIPT only requires a simple blood draw from the mother’s arm, making it a safe and non-invasive option. This reduces the risk of complications and eliminates the need for invasive techniques.
- Reduced False Positive Rate: NIPT has a significantly lower false positive rate compared to traditional screening methods like maternal serum screening.
